Apply finishes

Copy page ▾

A finish changes how a surface looks. It does not change the cut list, the cutting plan or what you buy. You select a finish from the swatches in Properties. Hold the pointer on a swatch to see its name.

Finish a part or a piece of furniture#

  1. Select the part or the furniture.
  2. In Properties, find the Finish row.
  3. Click a swatch.

For furniture you can use paint, clear finishes, veneers, laminates and worktop surfaces. For an assembly, the swatches also include metal, glass, plastic, ceramic and stone. A clear finish, for example Clear oil, keeps the colour and grain of the material and changes only the sheen. A finish on an assembly applies to every part in it, unless a part has its own finish.

To remove a finish, click the first swatch, Default (material look).

Finish all the doors of a unit#

Some furniture is made from parameters, for example a cabinet. For a part of such a unit, Properties shows Apply to.

  1. Select one part of the unit, for example a door.
  2. In Apply to, select all doors in followed by the name of the unit.
  3. Click a swatch in Finish.

All the parts of that kind in the unit get the finish. This includes parts that a later parameter change adds.

Paint or paper a wall#

  1. Select the wall.
  2. In Finish side, select inside (room) or outside. If the wall has skirting, you can also select skirting.
  3. Click a paint or wallpaper swatch in Finish.

Finish a full room#

  1. Select the room in the Model panel.
  2. In Properties, find Finishes.
  3. Click a swatch for Walls, Floor or Ceiling.

Walls paints or papers the inside of every wall in the room. Floor has boards, laminate, carpet and tiles, and the clear finishes. Ceiling has ceiling white and the paints.

Make your own colour#

  1. Select the item, and find its row of swatches as in the steps above.
  2. Click + after the last swatch in that row. Its name is New colour.
  3. In New colour…, type a Name.
  4. In Colour, select the colour.
  5. To change the sheen, select it in Sheen, for example Eggshell. The default is Matt.
  6. Click Create and apply.

KerfCraft applies the finish to the item, or to the wall or room side that you selected. A finish that you make is saved with the project. It shows in the swatches with the other finishes.

The form also has Category, Roughness, Metalness, Transmission and Texture. Category starts as the kind of swatches in that row, for example paint. Transmission is for glass: 1 is clear. A texture needs a Texture › Kind and a Texture › Scale, the size of one repeat.

The assistant can also make a finish. For example: "Make a paint finish called Hallway blue, colour #3c5a78, eggshell, and put it on the hall walls."

See the finishes in presentation mode#

  1. Click Presentation in the 3D view.

Presentation mode hides the grid, the axes, the edges and the selection outlines, and turns on shadows. Click Presentation again to go back.

To see through walls and ceilings while you work, click X-ray.
