Shape parts and add mouldings
Some steps: AI creditYou shape parts in the Properties panel, under Manufacturing. The model shows the shape, and the cut list orders the square blank and notes the operation.
Rout an edge profile#
- Select the part.
- At Edge profile, select the edges in the first list, for example top.
- To pick one edge, click pick, then click near that edge in the viewport.
- Select the profile: roundover, chamfer, cove, ogee or bevel.
- At W × D, ease, type the width and the depth in mm.
- Click apply.
If you leave the depth blank, it is the same as the width. Ease softens the edges where the profile meets the faces. To remove a profile, select none and click apply. The Edge profile row shows the profiles that the part has now.
Change the shape of a panel#
This works on a panel that you drew, not on a generated panel.
- Select the panel.
- At Shape, select rectangle, rounded corners, racetrack (D-end) or oval.
- For rounded corners, type the radius in mm.
The shape fills the panel, and KerfCraft draws it again when you resize the panel. Set the banding at Edge banding.
Taper a leg#
- Select a timber member.
- At Shape, select tapered.
- At Taper faces, select the inside faces or all four.
- At Taper from top, type the distance below the top where the taper starts.
- At End size, type the section at the bottom, for example
30 × 30.
Turn a leg#
- Select a timber member.
- At Shape, select turned.
- At Profile, select taperedLeg, baluster or bunFoot.
KerfCraft fits the profile to the length and blank of the member. The Operation row tells you what to do in the workshop. To make the member square again, set Shape to square.
Tapered and turned parts show "needs extra checking" in the cut list.
Add skirting or cornice round a room#
- Select the room.
- In the Properties panel, at Mouldings, click Skirting… or Cornice….
- At Profile, select the profile.
- If you want a different section, type the Height and the Thickness.
- Click Add.
Skirting is mitred at the corners and stops square at door openings. Cornice goes round the room at the ceiling, mitred at the corners. If you leave Height and Thickness blank, KerfCraft uses the section of the profile.
Add architrave round a door or window#
- Select the door or window opening.
- In the Properties panel, at Mouldings, click Architrave….
- At Profile, select Ovolo architrave or Torus architrave.
- Click Add.
A door gets two legs and a head. A window gets four sides. The architrave is on the room side of the wall.
Add a moulding along a line#
Use this for a dado rail, a picture rail or a bead.
- Click an empty area of the viewport, so that nothing is selected.
- In the Properties panel, at Moulding, click Along a line….
- At Profile, select the profile.
- At Points, type the plan points in mm, for example
500, 500; 1500, 500. - At Z, type the height of the bottom of the moulding.
- Type a Name, for example
Dado rail. - Click Add.
Put a ; between two points. If you select Closed, the line goes back to the first point. Side sets the side of the line that the moulding is on, as you look along the line. If you leave Z blank, the moulding is at the floor of the active level.
Moulding profiles#
The skirting profiles are torus (the default), ogee, bullnose, chamfered and lamb's tongue. The architrave profiles are ovolo (the default) and torus. The cornice profile is cove. Quarter-round and scotia beads go with skirting and cornice. Each length of moulding is a timber part in the cut list, with its mitre angles.
For a custom moulding profile, ask the assistant. Parts with a custom profile show "needs extra checking" in the cut list.
