# Draw walls and rooms in the plan view

Draw walls in the 2D plan, close them into rooms, and change wall positions and lengths.

The plan view is a 2D drawing of the active level, cut at 1200 mm above the floor. Use it to draw walls, move them and set their lengths. The 3D view shows the same model.

## Open the plan view

1. Find the **3D**, **Plan** and **Split** buttons in the main view.
2. Click **Plan** to see only the plan, or **Split** to see the plan beside the 3D view.

Use the mouse wheel to zoom. Drag empty space to pan. Click **⌂**, or press **Shift+Z**, to show the full model.

## Draw a room

1. Click **✎ Draw walls**, or press **W**.
2. Click the first corner.
3. Click the next corners. To give an exact length, type it and press **Enter**.
4. Click the first point again to close the room.

The status bar shows the floor area of the new room. KerfCraft finds rooms from closed loops of walls, so you do not draw a room separately. Each room shows its name, area, width and length in the plan.

The points you click are the inside corners of the room. KerfCraft builds the walls outside them, 100 mm thick and 2400 mm high.

While you draw, each wall snaps to horizontal or vertical and to the grid. Hold **Shift** to draw at any angle. The grid step changes when you zoom. With the **↖ Select** tool, the hint at the bottom of the plan shows the grid step.

Points also snap to the ends and midpoints of walls that are already on the level.

## Draw a wall that does not close a room

1. Click **✎ Draw walls**, or press **W**.
2. Click the start point.
3. Click the end point, and any more points.
4. Press **Enter** or double-click to finish.

An open wall is centred on the points you click. If its ends touch other walls, the walls join. If the new wall divides a room into two, the plan shows the two rooms.

Press Esc to remove the points of a wall that you did not finish. Press Esc again to stop drawing. You can also click **↖ Select** or press **W** to stop drawing.

## Move a wall

1. Click **↖ Select** in the plan view.
2. Drag the wall.

The wall moves parallel to itself. The plan shows the distance while you drag. The corners stay joined: the walls at each end get longer or shorter. The floor and ceiling follow the walls.

## Move a corner

1. Click a wall to select it. A round handle shows at each end.
2. Drag a handle.

A corner snaps to the ends of other walls. If there is no wall end near it, the wall stays horizontal or vertical. Hold **Shift** to drag it to any angle. Walls joined at that corner move with it.

## Set the length of a wall

1. Click a wall to select it.
2. Type the length, for example `4200`.
3. Press **Enter**.

This is the internal length, along the room face from corner to corner. KerfCraft moves the wall at the far end, so a rectangular room stays rectangular.

A wall must be at least 50 mm long. If an edit makes a wall shorter than that, or turns it inside out, KerfCraft does not do the edit and shows a message.

## See the details of a wall

Select a wall. A line at the top of the plan shows its name, wall type, thickness, height and how its ends join. To change the wall type, use **Wall type** in **Properties**.

## Trace over a drawing

1. Click **Underlay DXF…** in the plan view.
2. Select a DXF floor plan.
3. Draw walls over it. The draw tool snaps to the line ends of the drawing.

The underlay is for reference only. It is not part of the model, it is not exported and it is not saved with the project. To remove it, click **✕ underlay**.
