# Save a project

Give a draft a name and keep it with your projects, or save a copy under a new name.

KerfCraft saves each change automatically. Until you save a design by name, it is a draft. After your first change, a **Draft** badge shows in the toolbar.

KerfCraft keeps your projects and drafts in this browser, for the account you signed in with. To keep a copy outside the browser, [save a .kerf file](/docs/how-to/projects/save-and-open-a-kerf-file/).

## Save a draft by name

1. Select **File ▸ Save…**, or press Ctrl+S (⌘S on a Mac).
2. In **Name**, type a name for the project.
3. Click **Save**.

The status bar shows **Saved "name"**, and the **Draft** badge goes away. The project is now in **File ▸ Open recent** and **File ▸ All projects…**.

You can also click the **Draft** badge to open the same dialog.

To download a .kerf file at the same time, select **Also download a .kerf file** before you click **Save**. For a saved project, use **File ▸ Download .kerf…**.

## Save a saved project again

Select **File ▸ Save**, or press Ctrl+S (⌘S on a Mac). KerfCraft writes the project immediately and does not ask for a name.

## Save a copy under a new name

1. Select **File ▸ Save as…**, or press Ctrl+Shift+S (⇧⌘S on a Mac).
2. In **Name**, type a name for the copy. The default name ends in "(copy)".
3. Click **Save**.

The copy opens, and the original project stays as it was. The copy starts with an empty assistant conversation.

If the open design is a draft, **Save as…** opens the **Save project** dialog.

## When you leave a draft

If you changed a draft and then open a different project, KerfCraft asks **Save this draft?** first. This occurs for **File ▸ New**, **Open recent**, **All projects…**, **Open file…** and **Sample projects**.

- Click **Save…** to give the draft a name. After you click **Save**, the other project opens.
- Click **Keep as draft** to open the other project. The draft stays in **File ▸ All projects… ▸ Unsaved drafts**.
- Click **Cancel**, or press Esc, to stay in the draft.

KerfCraft does not ask for a saved project, or for a new project or sample that you did not change.

## If you see "⚠ Not saved"

A **⚠ Not saved** message in the toolbar means that the latest changes are only in this browser tab. If the message says **storage full**, the browser has no more space for projects.

1. Do not close the tab.
2. Select **File ▸ Import / Export…**.
3. On the **Export** tab, select **KerfCraft package (.kerf)**.
4. Click **Export…**. The file is a backup of the project as it is in the tab.
5. In **File ▸ All projects…**, delete old projects or drafts that you do not need.
6. Save the project again.

When storage is full, every .kerf export still writes the design as it is in the tab. This includes **Export .kerf…** in **All projects** and **File ▸ Save…** with the download option. The browser does not store the project until it has space again.
