# Export a STEP file

Export the parts of a project as exact solids with their assembly structure, for FreeCAD, Fusion, Onshape or SolidWorks.

A STEP AP242 file holds exact solids, not triangle meshes. Use it to continue a design in another CAD application. KerfCraft exports STEP files. It does not import them.

> **Beta.** Checked with an independent STEP reader (OpenCascade), not yet in FreeCAD, Fusion or other CAD software. Open the file in your software and check it.

## Export the file

1. Select **File ▸ Import / Export…**.
2. On the **Export** tab, select **STEP AP242 (.step)**.
3. Click **Whole project**, or select components first and click **Selection**.
4. Click **Export…**.

KerfCraft builds the solids and checks the file before it saves it. This can take some seconds for a large project. The file name has the project name and the revision, for example `Bookcase-rev12.step`.

If the scope has no manufactured parts, KerfCraft shows "Nothing to export" and does not make a file.

## What the file holds

- One solid for each manufactured part, in millimetres. Shaped panels, angled timber ends, joinery pockets, drilled holes and edge profiles are cut into the solids.
- The assembly structure and the component names.
- One colour for each part, from its finish or material.

## What the file does not hold

- Turned and tapered parts as their shape. They are exported as their square blank.
- Materials, grain, edge banding and cut list data.
- Parameters and formulas.
- Walls, floors, openings and other building elements. To export a building, see [Export an IFC file of a building](/docs/how-to/files/export-an-ifc-file/).

The report on the **Export** tab lists the components that are not exported, with the reason.
