# Where your designs are stored

KerfCraft keeps your projects in your browser, saves them automatically, and sends design data to a server only when you use AI help.

KerfCraft is local-first. Your projects stay in your browser and in the files that you save. KerfCraft does not keep your designs on its servers.
This page explains what is stored where. The [Privacy Policy](/privacy) gives the full details.

## In your browser

Your browser keeps these things in its own storage (IndexedDB):

- Your projects.
- Your model library and your 3D props, with small copies of the photos that you made the props from.
- The assistant conversation of each project.

Your browser also remembers some choices, for example the last project that you opened and the AI model that you selected.

Each Google account has its own storage in the browser. If two people sign in on the same browser, they do not see each other's projects.

## Automatic save

KerfCraft saves the open project in your browser shortly after each change. You do not have to save to keep your work in the browser.
If KerfCraft cannot save, for example because the browser storage is full, the toolbar shows a "Not saved" warning.

A project that you have not saved with a name is a draft. Use **File ▸ Save…** to give it a name.
If you leave a draft that you changed, KerfCraft asks if you want to save it or keep it as a draft. A draft that you keep stays in **File ▸ All projects…** until you save or discard it.

## Save your own files

Browser storage is not a backup. If you clear your browser's data, your projects and conversations are deleted. They are also not on your other computers.
KerfCraft is in beta, so save your projects to your own files too.

To save a file, select **Also download a .kerf file** in the **Save project** dialog, or use **File ▸ Download .kerf…** for a saved project. You can also include the assistant conversation in the file.
To open a .kerf file again, use **File ▸ Open file…**.

## What goes to the server

KerfCraft's server holds your account: your Google email address and your Firebase user id, your access or waitlist status, and any waitlist answers.
It also holds your credit ledger (credit, top-ups and the cost of each AI call), your Founding Maker invite, and the Terms that you accepted.
It does not hold your designs.

When you use the assistant or AI images, KerfCraft sends what the model needs to produce the result. That is your prompts and messages, the relevant parts of your design, and images.
For example, an image can be a view of your model to restyle, or a photo of an object to make into a 3D prop.
These go through KerfCraft's server to Vercel's AI Gateway, and then to the provider that runs the model.

KerfCraft's product analytics record the pages that you open in the app and the errors that the app gets.
For each AI step, they record the model, the tokens, the cost, the time and if it failed.
They also record any Good or Bad rating that you give a reply.
They use your Firebase user id, never your email address. They never record the content of your conversations or designs.
